The Two Steps in Alcohol Abuse Treatment

In an alcohol abuse treatment program the goal is to completely stop using alcohol for the rest of a person’s life. This is not an easy task and is usually accomplished by a combination of methods. If the person is committed to the program, has a network of people they can count on and is in good health then this goal becomes somewhat less difficult. As many as sixty percent of those who try to quit drinking will still be off the alcohol after the first year and a large percentage of those people will remain alcohol free for the rest of their lives. The first step that needs to be taken to allow for a successful treatment is for the person who is drinking to be able to admit that they have a problem with alcohol. Nothing can be accomplished without that first step.

Most programs that treat those with alcohol abuse issues divide their plan into two parts. The first is when the person stops drinking. This is known as detoxification. The second part is the recovery process. This is usually the more difficult part since once a person stops drinking alcohol their desire to drink does not disappear.
